It looks so innocuous, doesn't it? Three dribbles coming into the attic from somewhere around the chimney. And yet, after the thunderstorms early this morning, enough rain got through the roof to fill a large saucepan up to 2.5 inches. My husband bravely went up into the attic and took this photo 3 hours after the worst of the storm.
A third roofing contractor is supposed to come by tomorrow and give me an estimate. The first one, who didn't even come to the house, just sent me an estimate for around $750 for what I told him I thought the problem was, the flashing around the chimney. The second one did come by and gave me an estimate of $750, but said he wasn't exactly sure where the leaks were coming from, even after going in the attic, and it might cost up to $950 if he did "exploratory" roofing.
So whichever roofing contractor gets here first with his work crew gets my business. I will drown my sorrows with a cup of tea and go watch the Cowboys play now.

I still own a home building firm with my brother so I know a little....please have them check all the corner boards on the siding above the flashing also. Those corners will leak and it can go behind the flashings. Is there a 'flashing cricket" on the high side behind the chimney? Good Luck!
I certainly respect your decision to have it fixed right away; so many people would leave this minor problem and let it get worse before they did something about it. Nice job not ignoring it. You're a smart homeowner, but I have to say, Go Broncos!
Hi Robin, My husband is watching the same game and hopefully it is taking his mind off his appointment with the vascular surgeon in the morning. Hopefully it is taking your mind off your roof leak... Enjoy your tea and the game...
Thanks, Trey! Will do.
Denver is looking a little sloppy so far, Vic, but it's Dallas's game to lose. I always get nervous when they are ahead in the first half.
Howdy there Robin
Haven a roof leak, sure ain't no fun attall. If-en I were you, I sure would not use the first roofing contractor. Seen that he could not even come to take a look see of the outside and inside areas of your roof. It can sometimes be hard to find the starting point of a roof leak, because of the downward flow. From just looking at the photo, I can see a couple of possible problem spots.Trey has gave you some very good advise, about spots to have looked at.
We got you Robin! Wow those were some big plays by receivers and DB's on both teams. What a game! I hope you got your roof fixed.
It was a great game, Vic, even though I was heartbroken by the result of the last minute! I was very impressed by Denver's defense. They did a good job.
Thanks, Dale. If the first contractor shows up, I will make sure he looks at the roof and the attic and discuss your concerns. Unfortunately, all the contractors are scheduled 2 weeks out, and he will probably be the first one who can get to my house. I will keep you all posted!
Robin didn't get to watch any games today. I sure hope they can find the source of the leak and get it fixed before we have anymore rain.
I'm wondering if you told the second roofing contractor that you already had a quote from a first roofing contractor who never came out. That's usually the wrong thing to do because now he believes you'll hire him at $750 because he did come out, and he would be right 99% of the time, even though the problem might not require $750 worth of work.
Any roofing contractor who can't come determine what the problem is without relying on the home owner is not worth anything in my book.
Hi, Russel:
Actually, the third roofing contractor was a charm. Details soon, at Melissa's request!
Cheers,
Robin
